Pose Compelling Question: Students will review what it means to be a citizen of the United States using our vocabulary wall as well as the brainpop video on citizenship found at https://www.brainpop.com/socialstudies/usgovernment/citizenship/. Students will discuss citizenship in other countries, and the importance of being an active citizen in the community of which you are a part. Students will then listen to the read aloud: What if Everybody Did That? By Ellen Javernick regarding how small acts of citizenship help the greater good of a community. Students will then be given the opportunity to pose a question to research within their groups relating to citizen involvement within the community. Students may use the guiding vocabulary words: politically, socially, and economically to help as they pose questions relating to how citizens contribute to their community. Students will be encouraged to research from various global community lenses, being given the opportunity to research about their home towns or about the United States. (1 class period- 30 to 45 minutes)
Gather and Analyze Information: Students will use their question to guide research using teacher chosen research sites found on the class website. Class will brainstorm areas of research to go on lotus and students will be able to record their information in a lotus and add any more compelling questions to the bottom of the lotus for further research. (1 class period 30 min)
Synthesize Information: Students will gather in larger groups of 4-5 and share the information they have collected. Students will highlight “like” information to use in their presentation, question information that doesn’t seem to enhance the community, and push for more information in areas that are lacking. (15 min)
Critically Evaluate and Revise: Students will take note of areas that are lacking information and use technology and teacher chosen research sites to fill in gaps and holes in research. Students will make sure their research answers their original compelling question. Does their research teach the class the answer to their question and enable them to act as a well informed citizen? (15 minutes)
Share, Public, and Act: Students will prepare a Discovery Ed Board Builder presentation on their particular area of citizen involvement. The boards will be shared with the class through a gallery walk format: one student staying to present, others rotating through to learn about ways to be an active citizen in our community and other communities. Presenters will switch out so every student has the chance to speak and every student has the chance to learn from others. Students will then reflect through a Quick Write on one goal they have for themselves over the summer as a citizen of their community. Students from other countries who will be returning to those countries this summer may choose to reflect with this country in mind. (Making Board Builder: 45 minutes; Share and Reflect: 45 minutes)
Final Product: Discovery Ed Board Builder on student’s area of citizen involvement. Personal goal for summer involvement as a responsible citizen based on what was learned about citizenship from local and global community.
